Canadian Lynx
Overview
In Newfoundland the lynx is monitored and hunting is allowed only in certain provinces. Nova Scotia has only one place that the lynx can be found and that is Cape Breton. In Quebec there is a population of lynx throughout the boreal forest..
There has been a decrease in the numbers of the bobcat over the last few years. All hunting and trapping was stopped in 1991 in Quebec to help the numbers increase again. The lynx in Northern Manitoba is considered vulnerable. The bobcat is considered a furbearer under the Wildlife Act but since 1985 there has been no hunting season on them and any sightings are reported and monitored.
Hunting and Trapping The Lynx
Because of decreasing numbers in the lynx in Cape Breton there is no hunting or trapping season. In Quebec the same was happening, numbers decreased because of hunting in certain areas, now there is only designated areas that allow hunting and the time is limited to a few weeks.
Manitoba has no hunting season in the southern part, but in the northern parts of Manitoba there is a season for hunting and trapping. There is trapping allowed in Saskatchewan but seasons are closed during the low cycle of the lynx. Alberta allows trapping but monitors the cats taken by records from trappers and allow trapping on a quota system..
Other provinces such as Yukon, Northwest Territories, British Columbia, and Ontario also have a trapping season.
